I remember saying as a younger man that Tommy taught me more about being Irish than anyone else. Even though face to face I could barely understand his Brogue. DNA test says my roots are all in Ireland 100%, but raised in Pittsburgh, Pa. USA O'Halloran/O'Malley etc.

These gentlemen are as Irish as the gusting blusters off the Atlantic that lash the Connemara coast with the water without whisky

In South Africa I learned that a "Dutchman" is an offensive term for an Afrikaner, much like in Connemara Donkeyhead is an offensive term for a neighbour. Bit heavy on the donkeys though, on the Dutchmen too

When I was in 3rd grade in the late 70s,our school had some people in to sing their songs. I absolutely do not believe it was actually them. But I recall a few songs they did and I have seen Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem videos of the same . I wish I could have seen them live. I don't know who I did see, but I bet today they'd not get away with singing 7 Drunken Nights to grade schoolers!!!

My favorite song and it has been so for 40 years. Liam Clancy is the only one who sings it with heart and real Pathos. Look at his face while he is singing it- he inhabits the song. I have heard other people sing it but it sounds trite and mawkish from them.
